A day by pictures.
That is only true way to experience Lake Atitlan. The swaying, rolling waters so deeply blue that it was nearly impossible to see through them. The majestic mountains rising up around us, encapsulating a heaven on earth unlike any other. The crowded streets with their brilliant blues and yellows, their illuminating greens and reds. The bounce of the boat on the choppy water as we speed across the lake for what seems like years. The smiles on the faces of children playing in the shallows, of fishermen carrying in their haul, of the many foreigners who now call the small towns and villages all around the lake home.
Light bends in union with time, for with every gaze at the deep blue water or at the clear blue sky, time stops to let eyes linger. It is as if the lake is alive, as if she gives life to the many communities and families that call her shores home. Surely, she is beautiful, but her beauty is as full of depth as it is transcendent, and does not diminish from the charm and the warmth that emanates from the towns that surround her.
Large enough to feel like the open sea and small enough to feel like a home, Lake Atitlan is perfect in every way.
