Study abroad is a central tenet of the University Honors Program, which promotes travel to new and diverse destinations in order to foster increased cultural understanding and a better recognition of the interconnectedness of different peoples. As a student in the program, I have been encouraged to travel to unknown, interesting places--not only those across national borders or on the other side of oceans, but also in my own backyard. This encouragement has only helped to solidify a longstanding passion I have had for learning about diverse groups of people and traveling to new places with rich histories and cultures. Coming from a multi-ethnic family, I have always been appreciative of diversity. From a young age, I have similarly been fascinated by religion, culture, history, and politics, which are all central to better understanding the world around us. Before coming to the University of Cincinnati, I had the opportunity to travel to fascinating places across the United States and abroad, a trend which I sought to continue and expand upon after enrolling.
Fortunately, the University Honors Program not only provides opportunities to engage in the kind of global exploration that I would enjoy, but also the means to reflect upon how travel can teach me about the world and about myself. The Learning Objectives associated with the UHP's Global Studies Thematic Area are tied to possessing global literacy, as well as understanding the historical, geographical, political, social, and economic underpinnings of different cultures that define our world and it's many parts. Students who truly grasp the interdependence of global political systems and economies, as well as the environment, develop an understanding of their role as global citizens. By interacting with and appreciating people of different cultures, honors students are thus afforded the opportunity to participate in a global society.
Through the support of the program and the UC International Office, I have had wonderful opportunities to engage in a number of different study abroad experiences of different types, focuses, and lengths. Whether participating in a community engagement experience or a cultural immersion, the opportunities I have had to travel abroad with student groups and faculty-led trips have been absolutely amazing. In the future, I hope to continue my slow and steady exploration of the world, and participate in internships and truly self-designed endeavors so as to further widen my horizons. |
